Hidden Gem Review, Sing “Yesterday” for Me

What is the Premise?

In a modern Japan, Rikuo Uozumi has no ambition of moving forward with his life, working part time work after college and not really trying to find his future career. While Haru Nonaka has a crush on him from when she meet him while Rikuo was still in college, Rikuo still has a thing for his college crush Shinako Morinome. Though it seems she has Rou Hayakawa chasing after her.  A story of daily life lived 49% looking back, 51% looking forward.

What type of show is it?

A more lifelike drama. Unlike normal shows, where we feel like we get to see the entire story, this feels more as if the whole series is just one brief snapshot of the larger lives of the characters. We get to learn more of what happen in the past, and see them move forward to a uncertain future. And yet, while it is only a snapshot, we do get to watch our four leads grow as characters.

Is it a Hidden Gem?

A drama show that don’t seem to fit the drama formula. As Yamazaki said in Welcome to the NHK “A drama has a progressive thought, an emotional climax and a resolution, but our lives aren’t like that. All we get day after day, are a bunch of vague anxieties that are never really resolved.” Fun thing about this anime is that it does end on a note of some sort of resolution, giving it a ending of sorts. But this anime does give the impression of anxieties of daily lives. Everyone has a history, and it plays a role. No one really understands what everyone else is thinking. And sometimes minor misunderstandings lead to complications.

The detail in the animation is top notch as well. Sometimes in anime it seems that they spell out how they feel. I almost feel this has been more true lately. But the reactions sometimes speaks louder then the words in this anime.

A True Gem!
An Anime Worth going out of your way for, even likely to be enjoyed by some who isn’t normally into the setting.
