Anime Hidden Gem Reviews

Hidden Gem Review, Megalobox

What is the Premise?

Not much is known about the past of Junk Dog, our protagonist. Junk Dog is an underground fighter of Megalo Box, an evolution of boxing that utilizes mechanical limbs known as Gears to enhance the power of its users. While he hate losing, the underground nature of the ring he fights at requires him to lose when bets are high. One day he fights the Megalo Box champion Yuuri, and after Junk Dog’s first real lost he wants a rematch. With that he was left with the words from Yuuri “If you’re serious about fighting me again, then fight your way up to me and my ring.”

What type of show is it?

Calling this a sports anime would be correct but feel misleading. Megalo Box is basically boxing with power ups, but the characters interaction and story outside of the ring is well. They also don’t focus on the rules of boxing, pushing you right into the action pact fights. This gives the show more of an action then sports feel. This show has a very 90’s feel to it all around, style a lot like shows such as Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, and Samurai Champloo even though this anime was made in 2018.

Is it a Hidden Gem?

Anyone who has nostalgia for 90’s anime or just only seem to like the anime removed from Japan’s culture will find a Action and Story anime that easy to like here. Watching the first episode does great to drag people in. This show also does a great job at just being good across the board. There only few people seem to dislike this show for the number who likes it.

A True Gem!
An Anime Worth going out of your way for, even likely to be enjoyed by some who isn’t normally into the setting.

How much of it is there?

In Japan this show is called Megalo Box, it seems to be often all caps for the English without the space oddly enough.

One Season is out for this show.
